Overview
For centuries, the Makahiki season was a time of peace and agricultural fertility for Hawaii, a time when Hawaiians indulged in games, music and festivities. This spirit lives on in Hawaii, with its North Facing shores being buffeted with big waves throughout this time (November to February), allowing the traditional art of riding waves to live on as an inherent part of the culture.
The Ocean Games are not only a means of celebrating this special time, but also a way to bring together the most talented and respected watermen in the world for a festival that combines old with new and sport with music and art, for a celebration of Ocean culture, something that the Hawaiian people have being doing for centuries. Get ready for the most prolific ocean sports experience imaginable.

Program of Events
| Day 1 |
Culturally significant Opening Ceremony, with Kahuna arriving at the beach
aboard a traditional Hawaiian Sailing Canoe, to bless the event and re-enact
the coming of Lono.
This will mark the beginning of the event: men and women’s pro fleets
will assemble to compete in the most suitable sporting discipline for the conditions that day. |
| Day 2 |
This will be another day dedicated to the pro fleets as they battle it out
towards the climactic finals that will be contested over the weekend.
The evening will be spent at the heart of Maui’s North Shore, in Charley’s of Paia - live music. |
| Day 3 |
Saturday will mark the beginning of Youth and Amateur events and introduce
Canoe and Tandem Surfing elements. This will also be the first day of the Ocean Art exhibition and live music performances. Selected artists will be given boards by well-known local shapers on which they will be commissioned to create their own design. The boards will then be raffled through the weekend, with all proceeds going to support Maui’s Junior Lifeguard Program.
There will then be a high profile evening concert (location tbc) featuring celebrity musicians from the islands and beyond. |
| Day 4 |
Sunday will mark the continuation of events, with all fleets being contested
(subject to suitable conditions). There will be further live music performances between 12 and 5pm and an ice sculpting demonstration at the art exhibition.
Sunday evening entertainment will consist of a Movie night, where new, old and vintage ocean sports movies will be screened. |
| Day 5 |
Marked by a national holiday, the last day of the event will host the final
stages of all sporting contests, with the titles being decided on across all
disciplines. The Music and art displays will continue and culminate in a traditional Hawaiian Luau, with elaborate song and dance and a closing blessing by the Kahuna. This will also serve as the elaborate prize-giving ceremony where individual discipline and waterman awards will be presented. |
